Digital publishing could grow to $16.5 billion in worldwide sales by 2016, a rate five times more than predicted last year, according to ABI Research’s recent report, “Digital Publishing for Portable Devices.”
Additionally, ABI says that the success of digital content will be tied to people’s ability to buy not only through their devices, but multiple devices, including computers and smart phones.
However, some issues still need to be worked as the market grows.
Significant barriers to the growth of digital publishing remain, however, including licensing of back catalog material, the conversion of publishing workflows designed specifically for digital instead of print content, and most importantly for periodicals, pricing.
