I'm enjoying these interviews, here and over at WD.

I have great conflicts when I write about my family. I'd love to be more honest, but for safety reasons and to respect privacy, I can't share as much as I'd like to. My kids are older than Joel's. An anonymous blog is very appealing.

(Joel, if youre reading the comments, please do what you can to help Sean and Dave get their books published!)

Thank you for the wonderful interview with Joel. As a father, it is tough to balance the way society expects us to act versus our emotions. It takes a certain kind of strength to do what Joel did and recognize what he needed to do and act on it, society be damned. It was also great to see a bit into Joel's creative side. I hope this means you guys will be doing more interviews, you've picked great subjects.

[...] I’d like to commend Joel for opening up and sharing his story. Not many men speak up about depression after childbirth. While women are finally finding their voices (and using them), many men still find themselves in dark when it comes to admitting there are issues associated with the birth of a child. According to Joel, “Fathers are told all the time to just “man up” in the face of conflict, but this is a ver... [...]

Great interview, I'm interested in reading the book now.

You know, I've seen similar vitriolic reactions on mommy boards when other parents have written pieces that somehow offend other mothers. It's such a conflict for writers because the heart of what we do is tell the truth - even if we made the whole thing up, our job is to tell some truth about what it is to be human. And yet to do so is to open ourselves up to criticism not about our writing, but about our character.

While I applaud other people who write/blog about their parenting experiences, that's one of the reasons I choose not to write much about my children or my identity as a mother.
